ACROSTIC ADVICE

ACROSTIC ADVICE

Writing a Small Poem

What is the story? Asked to write a brief tip about teaching poetry in the classroom for my acrostic poem in the middle grade anthology What Is a Family?, I decided to use the poetic form itself to explain (with this photo taken by Uwe Baumann). That’s my WRITING story.

Now it’s your turn! What is your WRITING story?

This is so neat Anastasia– I’m sure some classrooms will get good use from it. Happy Poetry Friday!

I love the idea of using the form itself to teach the form. I started a collection of poems similar to this that never went anywhere.

I hope this is going to result in a “how-to” book, Anastasia. This is delightful to read the instructions poetically!

Very clear instructions for students; such a good idea to describe the form while showing it.

What better way to teach an acrostic poem by doing it acrostic-ally!

Good idea to use the form to demonstrate! Good, clear instructions, too! I especially like the invitation at the end.

It’s like a puzzle within a puzzle. 🙂 I wrote a Nonet to describe how to write a Nonet when my book NINE (collection of Nonet poems) was released. It’s been so useful in workshops with young writers!

Great use of the form to teach the form!

I like your acrostic, Anastasia. It is so clear.
Yes, why, yes I can write an acrostic.
Even in this comment
Section.

I love that your advice focuses on telling a story! One of my biggest peeves with acrostics in the classroom is that they turn out to be a list of loosely related words and not any kind of poem!

So creative, Anastasia – and congrats on the inclusion in WHAT IS A FAMILY?
I’m exploring poetic forms to stretch my poetry muscles this month!

I agree with Mary Lee. The best acrostics tell a story. Thank you for sharing!

Such a clever, and informative poem, and I love story folded into it too, thanks!
