CONVERSATION

Writing a Small Poem

What is the story? I knew we had owls living nearby because I could hear them calling in the dark, but I was never sure which kind until this week when we looked it up in an old bird book and discovered that the call and the massive body size (18-24″) both belonged to the great horned owl. (You can see how big they are in this photo by Amber Dawn.) The conversation that three of them had in the predawn hours by our house on Tuesday was the inspiration for this poem. That’s my CONVERSATION story — and my third November #smallpoem.

Now it’s your turn! What is your CONVERSATION story?

Anastasia, this poem prompt, what is your conversation story, is interesting. I think I will need to ponder what I heard lately and write a #smallpoem. “Calls cry” makes for an intriguing thought. I think that line of yours gives me the spark to write, Thank you.

Anastasia, this kind of conversation is one of my most favorite to eavesdrop! Thank you.

If I’m out at the right time, I hear coyotes howl. Yes, even in the city, there are coyotes. But a favorite recent conversation happened on Halloween. I must have been the first stop for one young boy and as they were leaving, he said to his dad: “She really gave me candy, Dad!” Although they must have explained, he didn’t understand until that moment! It was like a little gift to me to hear those words. Thanks, Anastasia, no owls in my neighborhood that I ever hear, love hearing about yours!

Anastasia, this poem is so fun! I love listening to the back and forth of birds– it always makes me so curious to know what they’re saying. Thank you for sharing, and happy Poetry Friday!

Birdsong is beguiling, Anastasia. You have harnessed it well in your short poem about a mighty bird. A magical discovery.

Owl calls are a special treat! We don’t hear them very often in these parts.

A-oooh! Yipyipyipyip
A-oooh!
I hunt while you sleep.
You wake while I eat.
A-oooh! Yipyipyipyip
A-oooh!
