HURRICANE!

HURRICANE!

Writing a Small Poem

What is the story? When my father worked for NASA, we lived through many hurricanes in Florida (as seen in this photo taken by David Mark) but I never expected to see a downgraded hurricane (now a tropical storm) in the Southern California town we moved to next — as the residents were also getting Earthquake Early Warning alerts on their phones! (The news media called it a hurriquake!) That’s my STORM story — and my fourth August #smallpoem.

Now it’s your turn! What is your STORM story?

Bite-sized poems full of emotion!
I’m so glad we don’t get hurricanes here in France. Stay safe!

Anastasia, yes, you thought when you moved to California that you left the hurricanes behind! Surprise. I got to experience Hilary too last weekend.

Sadly, too many weather-related surprises are happening this year. I hope the “Hilary” surprise wasn’t too bad for you, Anastasia. I grew up in Missouri with tornadoes often, my junior high hit giving us an early ending of the year. It isn’t fun to hide in the basement waiting.

Spot on, but sadly, probably not enough to do the job!

Hurriquake! What a terrifying thought! Hope you are ok.

I feel relatively safe here in Upstate New York, but scary storms could certainly happen someday. Your poem feels so heart felt.

I know my Florida family is thinking this every year now!

Ugh, I have too many weather stories to tell. 🙂 Earthquakes, being flooded out of our apartment in Alaska, hurricane scares in Florida, tornadoes and hail storms in Nebraska. Oh, I long to live someplace where it’s always 70 degrees and sunny. 🙂

Anastasia, your poem is one that many people would appreciate. Hurricanes are so prevalent now. I have a storm story based on Superstorm Sandy that wiped out Long Island.

Awakened early when dreams were unfinished;
storm on the stairs, blurry and famished.
“I made pancakes!” I sang sweetly.
“I want waffles!” the windows quaked greatly.

(ouch… weak – lol)

Oh my! That was quite wild last weekend for all living in California. I would want it to go away as well.

Hope you are safe. The news about storms always makes me a little queasy. Several years ago we had a tree crash through the skylight on our enclosed back porch during a rare mini-tornado. I had just walked through that space and narrowly missed it hitting me!

Oh Anastasia I hope all is well there with you. It’s unsettling to hear of storms hitting SoCal and now Florida, your home state.

I remember raking leaves as a chore as a kid. One year a huge storm hit and uprooted three large maple trees in my family’s yard, missing our neighbors’ garage by a hair. No one was hurt, thankfully. And…. it was a blessing by autumn!
