RAIN GAUGE

RAIN GAUGE

Writing a Small Poem

What is the story? It’s been raining here for days and days and DAYS, just like it did at the old house, where I wrote this poem for The Poetry of Science: The Poetry Friday Anthology for Science for Kids.

It always surprises me how low the number in the our rain gauge is after it’s been raining for so very long, but the number in our gauge is always close to what the weather guy says on the news, so that’s just how it works.

Now it’s your turn! What is your RAIN story?

Clever! We are in Autumn here in Australia, which feels a lot like Summer. It’s been super hot and then yesterday, it rained. I don’t have a gauge but it was just enough to produce petrichor. Ahhh. That sweet sweet smell. Which makes me wonder if that smell is universal across the world?

Our rain gauges are getting only slightly full around here after repeated days of rain…I just keep imagining those happy roots! Thanks for sharing your poem.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a proper rain gauge. Now I’m curious! I enjoyed your poem.

I absolutely love the wonderful Poetry Friday Anthologies, and here in California I’m definitely in agreement with your rain gauge!! I love how this poem contains instructions for use.

Anastasia, I agree. Your poem is sweet. I can especially relate now that I live in the desert, the numbers are very small. However, here’s my rain story, we have had more than two inches in the last week, which is really a lot for us! Our dirt roads were looking like rivers. We also had snow!

Your trees must be so happy! A nice mist — sounds like a facial.

It rained BUCKETS here yesterday, but we’ve got no human rain gauge to measure it, only the small pond in the easement that flooded the iris bed by the back fence. The iris are drying out now, but the pond remains and the weather radio keeps going off with flood warnings.

Fun! I’m the same way. It always seems that it has rained a FOOT. 🙂 And yet the rain gauge tells me I’m full of hyperbole, lol.

I agree! I’m always so sure the rain gauge must be wrong – it must have missed some of the water! I do love your use of repetition and you captured the child’s voice perfectly.
