BASEBALL

Writing a Small Poem

What is the story? I spent many afternoons in the dugout or behind home plate, rooting for the batter to make a hit. Every point counted, especially in June as the regular season was winding down. That’s what you see in this photo by Eduardo Balderas. That’s my BASEBALL story — and my second June #smallpoem.

Now it’s your turn! What is your BASEBALL story?

I can taste the salt and hear the crowd from your poem, Anastasia. My small poem is more of a play on puns for a particular player…
you’re a catch,
no ifs, ands, or bunts
🙂

My baseball story is I don’t like baseball. 🙂 I did write a poem about baseball for my NINE: A Book of Nonet Poems. And your poem is so warm and inviting. Maybe I like baseball after all. xo

Ah you’ve taken me back to my softball days, when my short stature guaranteed me a walk almost every time at bat, and the too-large catcher’s mask hid me from view.

favorite pasttime

summer days, grassy diamonds
centerfielder, dandelions
lawn chair, hotdogs, whiff of beers
crack of bat, dugout cheers

My baseball story is a co-rec softball story. It was slow pitch and I, surprise of all surprises, was a pretty darn good pitcher. It lasted only one season, but that’s okay. I got out while the getting was good!!

This reminded me of travel softball days with my daughter.
like the crack of a bat
we’re off for fun
early morning travel
a day of catch, hit, run

We had CO Rockies tickets from their beginnings & finally had to let them go but your poem brought me there, Anastasia, so much fun, can smell the popcorn, taste the beer. Now I get my thrills from watching a granddaughter’s softball games.

She’s the pitcher
throws another
past the batter
grimace work first
turns into a smile

Anastasia, I enjoy reading your small poems and did write one for June that you can find at my blog, Beyond LiteracyLink. Thoughts for June Days. May your June Days be filled with poetic goodness.

Baseball 2023

They thought up
new rules
to make innings go fast
so fans’ interest will last.
